PMDD Medication Management in Connecticut

Thoughtful, Evidence-Based Care for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

If you find yourself feeling like a different person during certain times of your menstrual cycle—overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, irritability, hopelessness, or emotional intensity—you are not alone. For some individuals, these changes are more than typical premenstrual symptoms. They may be signs of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).

At Rooted in Serenity Behavioral Health, I provide psychiatric medication management for adults experiencing PMDD and other menstrual cycle–related mood concerns. My goal is not simply to prescribe medication, but to understand how your symptoms fit into the bigger picture of your mental health, medical history, and daily life.

What is PMDD?

PMDD is a severe, cyclical mood disorder that occurs in relation to the menstrual cycle. Symptoms typically emerge during the luteal phase (the week or two before menstruation) and improve shortly after a period begins.

PMDD can cause:

  • Intense mood swings

  • Depression or hopelessness

  • Increased anxiety or panic

  • Irritability or anger

  • Feeling overwhelmed

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Fatigue

  • Changes in sleep or appetite

  • Feeling unlike yourself for part of every month

PMDD is not simply "bad PMS." It is a recognized medical condition that can significantly impact relationships, work, school, and quality of life.

Why Diagnosis Matters

Rooted in Serenity Behavioral Health | Psychiatric Medication Mangement | Connecticut

Not everyone who experiences mood changes around their menstrual cycle has PMDD.

Conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and trauma-related disorders can also fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle. In some cases, an existing mental health condition becomes more noticeable before menstruation—a pattern known as premenstrual exacerbation (PME), which differs from PMDD.

Because treatment recommendations may differ, taking the time to clarify the diagnosis is an important part of care.

My approach emphasizes thoughtful evaluation rather than rushing to a diagnosis.

My Approach to Treatment

PMDD treatment is highly individualized. What works well for one person may not be the best approach for someone else.

Depending on your symptoms and history, treatment may include:

  • Evidence-based psychiatric medication management

  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), including continuous or luteal-phase dosing when appropriate

  • Evaluation of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD

  • Psychoeducation to better understand symptom patterns

  • Lifestyle recommendations that support overall mental health

  • Collaboration with your primary care provider or gynecologist when appropriate

Treatment decisions are made collaboratively, with careful consideration of your goals, preferences, and previous experiences with medication.

A Thoughtful, Whole-Person Perspective

As a Family Nurse Practitioner specializing in psychiatric medication management, I value understanding how mental health, physical health, sleep, stress, and hormonal changes interact.

While PMDD is diagnosed clinically—not through hormone testing—I believe it's important to consider the whole person rather than focusing on symptoms in isolation.
