Psychiatric Medication Management

Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

What is integrative care?

Integrative care is a whole-person, medical approach that looks beyond symptoms to understand how mental health can be influenced by sleep, stress, physical health, medications, and daily routines. At Rooted in Serenity Behavioral Health, this means evidence-based psychiatric medication management with thoughtful attention to factors that may affect how you feel and how treatment works.

Do you see adults via telehealth and in person?

Yes. We offer secure telehealth statewide across Connecticut and limited in-person appointments in Middlebury, CT.

How do I get started?

All new patients begin with a 15-minute consultation call. This brief call allows us to review concerns at a high level, confirm insurance coverage, and ensure care is an appropriate fit before scheduling an initial evaluation.

How soon can I schedule?

Most new patients are typically scheduled within 1–2 weeks, depending on availability. You can request a consultation call through our Appointments page.

Do you diagnose ADHD in adults?

Yes. ADHD evaluations are part of psychiatric care when clinically appropriate. Diagnosis is based on a comprehensive assessment, including history, symptom patterns, and functional impact. A diagnosis is not guaranteed, and treatment decisions are made collaboratively based on clinical findings.

What concerns do you commonly treat?

Common focus areas include:

  • ADHD

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Depressive disorders (mild to moderate)

  • PMDD

  • Insomnia and sleep-related concerns

  • Medication side effects and treatment optimization

If you’re unsure whether your concerns are within scope, we encourage you to request a consultation call.

Insurance, Self-Pay & Billing

Which insurance plans do you accept?

We are in-network with many major plans, including UnitedHealthcare/Optum, Aetna, Anthem | BCBS, Carelon, Cigna | Evernorth, ConnectiCare, Oxford, and HUSKY Health (CT Medicaid). Coverage varies by plan; we recommend confirming benefits directly with your insurer.

Do you accept Husky (CT Medicaid)?

Yes—HUSKY Health (CT Medicaid) is accepted. We’re happy to help you understand next steps for scheduling.

Do you accept Medicare?

No. Rooted in Serenity Behavioral Health does not participate in Medicare at this time.

Patients with Medicare may choose to seek care with a Medicare-participating provider or explore private-pay options with a provider who has opted out of Medicare.

Can I use out-of-network benefits?

If your plan includes out-of-network coverage, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement. We can provide a superbill with CPT and diagnosis codes for you to submit to your insurer.

Do you offer self-pay rates and a Good Faith Estimate?

Transparent self-pay rates are available and shared in advance.. In accordance with the No Surprises Act, self-pay patients receive a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) of expected costs before beginning care.

Appointments & Policies

What happens at the first visit?

Your initial evaluation is a comprehensive psychiatric assessment and treatment planning visit. We review relevant mental health history, current symptoms, medical background, medications, and contributing factors such as sleep and stress patterns. We then discuss treatment options and outline a medication management plan.

How long are follow-up visits?

Follow-up appointments are typically scheduled for approximately 30 minutes. Visit complexity—not only duration—may influence coding and cost when appropriate.

How often are follow-up appointments required?

Follow-up frequency varies by medication and clinical need. Most patients are seen every 2 to 4 weeks initially, then less frequently once symptoms are stable. Ongoing follow-up is required to continue prescriptions safely.

What is your cancellation/no-show policy?

We kindly ask for 48 business hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations and/or no-shows are subject to a fee (not billable to insurance).

Do you provide letters or documentation for accommodations?

When clinically appropriate and within scope, we may provide limited documentation for academic accommodations (such as school or testing accommodations) after an established treatment relationship.

We do not complete paperwork or certifications for disability determinations, FMLA, workers’ compensation, legal proceedings, or long-term medical leave.

Requests for documentation are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may require a dedicated appointment or additional fee.

Medication & Refills

How do refills work?

Medication refills are managed through the secure patient portal. Please submit refill requests with at least 3 business days’ notice.

For safety and appropriate monitoring, active prescriptions require regular follow-up appointments. Refill requests may be deferred if a follow-up visit is overdue or if clinical reassessment is needed.

Can I request specific medications?

You are welcome to share past experiences or preferences. Final medication decisions are based on clinical judgment, safety considerations, and appropriateness for your symptoms and medical history.

Do you prescribe controlled substances (e.g., stimulants or benzodiazepines)?

Controlled medications may be prescribed when clinically appropriate and safe. This may include treatment agreements, periodic urine drug screening, and review of the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP). Benzodiazepines are used cautiously and only prescribed short-term when clinically indicated.

Do you handle prior authorizations for medications?

Yes. When a medication requires prior authorization, our office will submit the necessary documentation as part of your care. Please note that prior authorizations are reviewed and approved by insurance companies, not by the provider, and processing times can vary by plan.

We recommend allowing 5-7 business days for prior authorization requests to be completed. Delays or denials are determined by your insurance carrier and may require alternative medication options.

Are refills or prior authorizations handled after hours or urgently?

No. Rooted in Serenity Behavioral Health does not provide after-hours medication management, urgent refill processing, or emergency services.

If you are running low on medication, please submit refill or prior authorization requests well in advance to avoid interruptions in treatment.

Do you provide Suboxone or medication-assisted treatment (MAT)?

No. We do not provide Suboxone, buprenorphine, or other MAT services. Patients needing these services should seek specialized addiction medicine or dual-diagnosis programs.

Do you coordinate with therapists or primary care?

Yes. With your consent, we collaborate with therapists and primary care providers when appropriate to support coordinated care.
